Use Of Essential Oils In Certain Health Conditions

Essential oils are an alternative to prescription and over-the-counter products used to cure various conditions. They are used in aromatherapy and massage to relieve patient stress, boost health, and even treat serious medical disorders like cancer. Though their uses date back to ancient times, these useful natural plant botanicals were not greatly embraced until recently. Immune system support is one of the most common essential oils uses.

Our immune systems are under frequent attack by compounds within our environment. Cold and flu season seems to get longer each year. Plants use their essential oils to resist invaders such as microbes, and these oils can do the same thing for our bodies. The chemical makeup of the oil from each plant varies and there are some oils that efficiently support our bodily defenses against bacteria and viruses.

The manner these oils protect us varies from keeping our immediate space free of microbes, to enhancing immune system function, to destroying microbes that enter our bodies. Diffusing aromatherapy essential oils within the air purifies our environment. This is perfect for an office that always seems to have at least one coughing or sneezing co-worker. It serves as the first line of defense in the war against immune system attackers.

Oils such as ravensara, green myrtle, or eucalyptus radiata can be diffused in the air as a defense mechanism. One popular blend combines 5 parts lemon oil, three parts clove bud oil, 2 parts cinnamon bark oil, and one and a half parts each of rosemary cineol and eucalyptus radiata in a cold air diffuser. A fine mist is created by the diffuser, which disperses through the immediate environment to protect the user against microbes.

Additional protective measures involve strengthening our immune systems. Research surrounds the ability of essential oils to keep viruses from entering into cell walls, control bacteria levels, and cleanse our bodies of toxins. Bay laurel, also called laurel leaf, and niaouli are two of several oils useful in this regard. Applying 10 to 20 drops of niaouli to the meridians of the body right after a shower fortifies the immune system. Bay laurel supports the lymph system and applying a few drops to the lymph nodes in the underarms or neck will instantly relieve swollen glands.

If these preventative measures are not taken and illness sets in, there are pure essential oils that can help ease symptoms. At the first sign of a cold or flu, apply 10 to 20 drops each of bay laurel and eucalyptus radiata oils to the skin while in a steam shower. Apply bay laurel to the lymph nodes and eucalyptus to the back and chest. To reduce sore throat symptoms, one drop of bay laurel can be orally taken once or twice daily.

If eucalyptus is too strong-smelling to use during a bronchial infection, green myrtle can be used in its place. Ravensara applied in the same manner is a stronger antiviral used to cure a severe cold or flu. An individual with skin sensitivities can dilute these essential oils to five percent within a carrier oil like hazelnut or directly inhale them through a diffuser.
