5 Things You Can Do To Protect Yourself from the Flu and Other Illness - My Spa Shop

Recently many mySpaShop partners have shared with us that they have been receiving numerous calls and emails about the coronavirus/COVID-19A.  Ellie Whalen, the founder of Sprayology, shares her insights.

Five things you should be doing to protect yourself, from illness..

1.) Boost Your Immune System

"At Sprayology we believe in improving our overall health by strengthening our immune function so our bodies are better prepared to fight whatever illness comes our way. We also believe we need to look at all factors that can impact our daily health and our body's ability to prevent and fight illness. This includes the impact that stress, sleep, nutrition, exercise, etc., all have on our health and well-being."

In an article Boost Your Immunity published February 28, 2020, in Organic Spa Magazine, freelance writer Rona Bergagrees.   "It’s smart to keep your immune system strong so that you can ward off what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says is a flu that is even worse than last year’s... and that one was historically bad. With fears of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) also sweeping the globe, now is the time to keep yourself fortified."  Rona suggests (below), steps you can take:

Keep Yourself Fortified

Exercise

Whether you jog, dance, hike or swim, keep moving. Find an activity that you love, and will keep up. Research shows that exercise provides a boost to the cells in your body that attack bacteria.

Eat Color

Make sure to munch on greens (kale, spinach), reds (beets, berries, red peppers), and oranges (carrots, citrus), rich in antioxidants and vitamin C.

Reduce stress

Managing your stress through meditation, yoga and quiet time spent doing things that you enjoy, can make your system less vulnerable.

Try Natural Remedies

Elderberry: Has been used to treat infections by native people for centuries, and it is now hugely trendy. During the height of cold and flu season, it can be a good idea to take elderberry syrup, supplements or gummies prophylactically, as elderberry contains antioxidants that help boost immunity.

Oil of Oregano: An old Italian remedy, oil of oregano was used by the Ancient Greeks and Roman for medicinal purposes. The oil contains phenols, terpenes and terpenoids, which have powerful antioxidant properties, and also give it a fragrant smell. It is a natural antibiotic that can help fight bacteria.

Oregano also has 42 times the antioxidant level of apples and four times that of blueberries, gram per gram, and the oil is extremely concentrated, so you don’t need very much. Also recommended to take prophylactically.

Reishi Mushroom: Found in supplements or tea, or in powder form to stir into your choice of liquid, the reishi mushroom helps boost the immune system, improve sleep and lessen fatigue. It grows in hot, humid climates, largely in Asia. Studies have shown that reishi may alter inflammation pathways in white blood cells, which are critical parts of your immune system.

2.) Consider Homeopathic and Vitamin Sprays

"As the founder of Sprayology, I have personally experienced the healing power of our formulas. I use multiple formulas a day and am currently taking certain formulas specifically due to my concerns over COVID-19.

It has been over 15 years since I needed an inhaler to treat asthma." Ellie shares. "I suffered with asthma from the ages of 18-39. I have taken almost no allopathic medication in almost 15 years and at age 55 I am on no prescribed medications. I know this is because of Sprayology."

Alternative methods continue to be questioned...
"The media has reported that some people are seeking “alternative” remedies to prevent infection with SARS-CoV-2 or to treat the 2019 coronavirus disease now called COVID-19. Some of these purported remedies include herbal therapies and teas. There is no scientific evidence that any of these alternative remedies can prevent or cure the illness caused by this virus."   ~National Center for Complementary and Integrative.
We suggest that you are prudent in investigating and evaluating as many options as possible, including checking with your doctor,  before making a determination about what is right for you and your family.  (mSS)

3.) Maintain a Close Relationship with Your MD

"I also believe in integration and having a good relationship with my medical doctor. I get an annual exam, blood work and standard testing to have multiple data points concerning my health."

4.) Listen to Your Body

"I listen to my body, paying attention to changes and making adjustments based on the data my body is giving me. My body is my responsibility and prevention is always my first goal.  Now, at this time I am focused on immune function and respiratory health due to the concerns over COVID-19."

Ellie gauges the state of her body by asking herself the questions below:

Questions to Ask Yourself:
  • When I get sick do I recover quickly?
  • Am I getting sick more frequently lately?
  • When I get sick what is my weakness?
  • How is my energy level been lately?
  • How is my current stress level?
  • How much sleep am I getting regularly?
  • How much water am I drinking daily?
  • How healthy am I eating?
  • How regularly do I exercise?
  • What from my answers above can I work to improve?
  • What actions will I take to improve my health?

5.) Take Responsibility

"At this time of concern ask yourself;  How am I taking care of my health?  Identify areas of weakness in your daily life and more specifically, areas where you can take steps toward improvements including the general steps listed below. "
