Fall is a magical time - my personal favorite season. There is no equal to the rich colors, the crisp feel and the sweet smells of fall. More than that, Fall sets the tone for reflection and renewal, and kindles a desire to bring back some of the things we may have let go of during the summer months. It sharpens us, and helps us to return to ourselves... and to our journey.
How to start to put all of this rediscovered inspiration to use? Start at the beginning! I learned this years ago from The Wizard of Oz. Seriously, the first step is assessment - knowing what you want your health to look like helps you recommit. Wellness goals need to be revisited from time to time to make certain that your practices are really helping you stay on track and reach your targets. Try asking yourself “Why does my health matter?”, “What gives me the greatest peace?”, and “When am I my best self?” (I love this question). It’s only by asking the right questions can we find the right answers.
I know people who start to demotivate in the fall, who become depressed viewing it as the precursor to the long winter season. If you are one of these people ask yourself this final question: “What better way to combat the blues than to do something about them?” Look around and find stimulation in the brilliant colors of the leaves, the sweet smells of cinnamon, the nostalgia of children carrying books. Then answer the questions from above, and come up with ways to bring your answers to the moment. Grab fall by the horns, and bring into your practice.
One incredible way to embrace the season is outdoor fitness. Grab a yoga mat and get moving. These are my favorite 4 that can be done anywhere! Push-Ups, Squats, Turkish Get-Ups & Planks - 3 sets of each. After that? Well.. rest. Take a breath, and I mean really take a breath. Now that you are in nature, don’t miss the opportunity to sit, be still, and take Fall in. Meditate - It’s easier than it sounds, and can you think of a better place? Finally, bring it all home. (There’s no place like home, another important lesson). Use the bounty of the season to wake up your spa rituals with brilliant colors, scents, and flavors. Here are some fantastic ideas to get you started.
